Tips for Today’s Entrepreneurs

It happens frequently after my Workshops or Keynotes on Innovation & Creativity that entrepreneurs will seek me out in search of tangible tips to guide them as they begin to navigate the often stormy seas of entrepreneurship. I am always happy to support in any way that I can, and as such I make my top eight tips for today’s entrepreneurs available to everyone, and in no particular order:

My Top 8 Tips

#1. Do what you love – invariably your passion will translate to excellence in your field.

#2. Prioritize consumer insights at the highest level – visit them at their homes, invite them to speak candidly about your products, and engage in meaningful conversations with them. You will be surprised at what you learn and you should always heed this information.

#3. Do not market at your consumers; instead, engage with them by creating experiences.

# 4. Understand your ‘why’, which is to say, the reason your business exists. As Simon Sinek quintessentially quotes: “people buy not what you do, but why you do it”.

#5. Storytelling is king. Rational decisions are seldom made concerning brands or purchases, as we humans are by nature emotional beings. Your business needs meaningful stories that resonate with your consumers, and you need to tell these stories in a transparent and interesting manner.

#6. Be kind to every single person who crosses your path, 100% of the time.

#7. Invest in time spent working with people who think differently than you do, as innovation is inherent in diversity.

#8. Have fun. As Mary Poppins famously reminds: “in every job that must be done there is an element of fun”. Not only does this simply increase the joy you take from your work, but it also opens your brain to increase your capacity for innovation and having the next big idea (read more on that here).
